Villa Didon
Hotel Description
Villa Didon is a dazzling white hotel with a superb restaurant, Spoon Carthage by Alain Ducasse, set high on a cypress-shaded hilltop in Carthage where Queen Dido is said to have lived. The 1960s structure was revamped by the French architect Philippe Boisselier, and his sharp, clean lines and colour scheme of muted greys and whites enhance the dreamy, panoramic views of the Bay of Tunis. All the open-plan suites have a glass wall and private terrace overlooking the ancient Carthaginian ruins. The vestiges of Roman thermae and the Punic Harbour can be viewed from your bed, or while soaking in an elevated marble bath-Jacuzzi in the middle of the bedroom. The creative mix of contemporary design (low-slung violet sofas by Francesco Rota in the bar, a red-glass lift, transparent desk chairs by Philippe Starck) with colourful Tunisian woven bedspreads and wall hangings works well. At Spoon, talented chefs Mehdi Khalid and Julian Mercier transform local market produce into Mediterranean-style dishes such as saut
